Manager, Operations
Tasks
- Manage department staff and ensures that the workload is distributed properly amongst department personnel
- Annually perform vendor review and analysis and documents results as well as action items with deadlines
- Monitor port operations to ensure work is flowing in accordance with defined processes
- Analyze port operations to identify opportunities for cost reduction and cost control
- Negotiate contracts with vendors and evaluates potential new vendors
- Analyze shipment problems and identifies corrective actions
- Provide a Terminal / Regional departure report to be sent to GASC with copies to Lines
- Ensure consistent application of Hapag-Lloyd policies to all personnel actions
- Oversee maintenance programs with vendors, including performance evaluation, physical audits and quality audits
- Report and control costs, including preparation of cost reports by location on equipment type, parts prices and labor task times
- Evaluate equipment to assure that new equipment purchases are up to specifications and follows up with manufacturers on equipment performance in the field
- Manage vendor relationships in order to contain or lower costs while maintaining company standards for quality of maintenance and repairs
- Administer MARS, and trains internal staff and vendors on the utilization of MARS
- Planning responsibility to project future demand/surplus situations and arrange necessary steps to counter-balance negative/positive development in accordance with regional equipment
- Produce weekly equipment forecast with input from marketing/local sales/product management for Area and distribute to all relevant parties
- Responsible for ensuring all Terminals / Depots have EDI connectivity
- Supervise stock feeds (zone cross) as well as dead headings to other areas/regions with local and regional equipment management
- Request/arrange lease/sublease arrangements with partner lines or other shipping lines in association with regional equipment
- Supervise Overdue tracing in Area. Notify customer service of long stays for their proper follow up
- Entry point for off-hires/container sales/equipment claims for agents in Area
- Watch/discuss key figure development like turn times, import/export requirement development, surplus/demand costs with local equipment management/sales/product management and initiate actions with regional equipment
- Turn time supply for equipment budget in Area
- Supervise and manage all containers processing in FIS equipment
- Determine equipment availability for special shipments and communicate with sales
- Trouble shooting for reefer issues and liaison to ensure units are repaired as necessary
- Supervise import and export intermodal shipments
- Transfer FIS work orders to SAP. Approves FIS work orders and Purchase Orders in SAP
- Monitor and verifies work orders are performed in requested time frame
- Review accounting watch-list to ensure proper rates and vendors are being utilized
- Quote inland rates for intermodal and out-of-gauge transports
- Perform annual trucker bid packages to ensure cost effective motor carriers are chosen as house carriers
- Research and provide documentation for all matters relating to intermodal cargo claims.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or foreign equivalent from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of three (3) years experience in the specific or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience. One (1) year experience at the supervisory level preferred
- Customer orientation and service mentality
- Solid communication skills with the ability to take initiative
- Ability to present complex correlations in a clear way
- Comprehensive knowledge of user application systems (FIS, COMPASS, MS Office, etc.)
- Team player / Flexible / Cooperative
- Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English required
- Excellent command of written and spoken Spanish required
